The idea is to have the encyclopedia burst open with different forms of information flowing out of a rainbow. The team also rebuilds the book with finer detailing with some nice brick lettering.

LEGO Masters Netherlands / Belgium

Episode 3 Recap

Three episodes in and the great LEGO Masters battle between The Dutch and the Flemish continue! With the team saying farewell to Anne and Arne the challenge ups the stakes with a replica challenge. Several household products are on display for the teams to replicate. Exactly! With another elimination to come the teams have six hours to build their replica objects. As Dreis and Killian won in the last episode they get the advantage of choosing which object they want personally, as well as assign the others to the rest of the teams. Dirk Denoyelle is the guest judge, he is a LEGO certified professional who runs a business similar to Brickman. He offers tips on what makes a good replica, knowing what to keep and remove.

Thomas and Roy – Dust Buster

This is a challenge as a section of the object is transparent. But the team rise to the challenge, even going so far as to add a motor section that blows around items of dust.

Jan and Julien – Set of scales

Another set of round shapes with the bowl and the main body, along with additional challenges such as creating the scale’s meter set behind a transparent glass with the dial. They also go a bit extra and create some nice SNOT ball fruit as well as a lever mechanism where the dial actually moves when the bowl is placed on.

Dries and Killian – Shoe

A clever use of linking pieces help create the outline of the shoe, but the team struggles in building up the bodywork. They do their best to use bricks that adhere to the object’s look and feel, such as flat pieces for the leather, and studs facing down for the grip as well as the little bit of red branding which is well received.

René and Douwe – Flip lid rubbish bin

Dreading this they discover yellow curved track pieces that happen to be the same diameter of the bin. However, they realize late into the game that the smooth surfaces offer little options to build on hinges. This gets called out as the very simple design shows anything that’s missing in the LEGO model and the Brickmaster calls them out for not using their time to work out the finer details.

Oscar and Ine – Toilet Brush

With its conical shape and needing space and strength to hold a brush, this proves to be quite the challenge. Some nice use of technic panels to form an accurate opening and clever use of tyres to create the handle. Dirk points out that the bristles do look quite lacking, creating an effect of being well used.

Ernesto and Marco – Encyclopedia

With a ton of detailing on the front cover with all sorts of objects and creatures, the team opt for an abstract representation using a sort of mosaic effect built around a hinged book that opens up to a page. The 3D effect is given praise but the judges feel they could have gone even further.

Marcel and Bibi – Teapot

A concave surface makes for a challenging SNOT build of the main body, but it’s a fragile teapot that frustrates a bit during the build made harder by the limited range of dark blue pieces that match the teapot. They get praise for accomplishing this but it’s noted for being hollow.

The team that wins with a glowing commendation from Brickmaster is Thomas and Roy..an.. But… we have a twist!

The Twist

With the exception of the winning team, each other team has to now move their model one table across for the next challenge: Take the build you’ve been given and bring it to life! Give it a face and arms and put in in a fantastic world. But the original object must remain recognizable. They have 8 hours.

Dries and Killian -Toilet Brush – Romantic Couple

Deciding to turn the notion that a toilet brush is filthy on its head, they note they technically have two objects, a brush and the holder. They decide to have the result be a monster serenading the brush who dances on a stage. There’s some fantastic detailing around the stage but the judges point out that less is more and the time spent building the stage could have been spent on the characters.

René and Douwe – Shoe – Dog

Their plan is to turn it into Jimmy the Beagle with a wagging tail. But the shoe is incredibly fragile and keeps falling apart. The additional reinforcements only add bulk to the build and Brickmaster and Dirk mention it’s moving further away from looking like a shoe and even as a dog it’s lacking. The end result isn’t completed and they are on the bottom two.

Ernesto and Marco – Teapot – Deep Tea Monster

Their initial idea of adding a nose and face to the teapot slowly goes awry as the fragile model constantly falls apart. The build is then given a dense background and decoration that the judges comment looks incredibly busy and hard to read visually. Additionally, the teapot doesn’t look like a teapot to the judges and they are placed at the bottom two.

Jan and Julien – Book – Marcel the Bookworm

The idea is to have the encyclopedia burst open with different forms of information flowing out of a rainbow. The team also rebuilds the book. with some nice brick lettering as well as some incredible plate pinching to create the pages.

Marcel and Bibi – Bin – Dirty Harry

The bin’s content comes alive and threatens to take over. There is some fantastic expressive detailing on the faces of the garbage creatures as well as the bin itself. With the team struggling with the teapot in the first half, this is a great turnaround.

Oscar and Ine – Scales – Monster

The scales have come alive and is chasing after the fruit that has repeatedly been put on its head. The design is praised but the judges felt the story was a bit lacking in action and needed things. like fruit being actively eaten or grabbed.

The Verdict

With the judging over the teams are lined up and are ready for the verdict. The top two are Marcel and Bibi and Jan and Julien with René and Douwe and Ernesto and Marco at the bottom. The two top teams are neck and neck with fantastic characters and style. But Jan and Julien take the prize for having a bit more sophistication in their technical ability.

The team that sadly leaves us this week is René and Douwe as an unfinished build puts them at the very bottom. Next week – The Shake Challenge!
