LEGO Masters U.S Season 2 – Explosion Challenge

Each team has to pick a Minifigure hero who is doing a cool cinematic walk away from one of the following explosions. Glitter, slime, water, and coloured dust. The brick masters are looking for one-take epic stunts where the hero has a central role in the story, are they are the hero or escaping from a disaster, but are kept safe from the explosion’s blast. Jamie backs this up by noting that the scene has to break apart really well and imaginatively. They have ten hours to realise their ambitions.

The Builds

Zack and Wayne – Alien – Slime – Captain Blastro

Their hero’s spaceship is under attack. As the crew evacuates the ship’s engines are rigged to blow. The team chooses not to use the golden brick, and the button is pressed. The explosion goes off well with all of the escaping crew surviving as the alien is blown into orange chunks drawing praise from Jamie for controlling the destruction.

Zach and Tim – Monster Scientist – Slime – World Domination

The father-son team has settled on a scientist bent on world domination with his factory exploding in slime with the hopes that a wall will drop down to reveal “pow!” Despite the explosion cleaning up the area, the wall didn’t fall down and the wow factor was somewhat lost.

Mark and Steven – Plant Monster – Water – Watermelon Madness

Wondering how water works with plants, they go with a giant mutated watermelon. The explosion is an effective one, dramatically ripping the watermelon’s monster’s head in half but sadly the minifig hero gets caught in the blast.

Syreeta and Randall – Centaur – Dust – Bonita Apple Bomb

A centaur is escaping a wizard’s evil castle so leaves a bonita apple bomb in the cauldron as a nasty surprise on the way out. Realizing they have built a wall as a backdrop that’s too sturdy they remove it for a plan B. However, plan B still remains standing despite the witch getting passed.

Natalie and Michelle – Intergalactic Girl – Slime – Intergalactic Pick Me Up

Intergalactic girl wonders why everyone is feeling run down, she discovers that the popular coffee place is serving decaf disguised as regular coffee so sets about removing it from the galaxy.

Paras and Moto – Elf Girl – Water – The Break & The Rainbow Aftermath

A giant dam holds back a magical river which is released by the Elf Girl. Amy loves how they strategically setup a row of rainbow bricks that exploded in rows of colours as opposed to one big mass.

Maria and Philip – Cabaret Singer – Water – Cabaret Getaway

They decide to set their cabaret singer at a hotel that’s exploding with water. They focus on the fountain being a point of explosion.

Susan and Jen – Wizard – Glitter – Problem Solved

A potion that creates a horrible mutant spider that needs to get magicked away. The team hopes to redeem themselves from a rocky first start. A fantastic explosion that draws praise from Amy as the spider is a great focal point for the destruction.

Jack and Dawn – Jewel Thief – Glitter – Opal The Jewel Thief

Feeling they felt a bit behind with not having working motion in the last build they decide to step it up this week by having the store the thief is stealing from blow up in a glittery explosion. Amy notes that the foreground is lacking elements. Sadly the explosion doesn’t damage the buildings as hoped to Jamie’s disappointment.

Dave and Richard – Violin Guy – Dust – In The Key Of G Major

Using their backgrounds as being from cities with urban blight they focus on the violinist casting a spell which has a factory get exploded with dust to reveal the greenspace underneath. The moment of boom arrives and seems to go to plan with the building getting taken out with a few musical notes left behind.

Caleb and Jacob – Rocket Boy – Glitter – Rocket Boy Defends The Moon

Rocket boy is defending the moon from attack with three UFO’s exploding. They get praise from Jamie for setting two of the charges up high within opposing UFOs.

Bryan and Lauren – Lady Bug – Dust – Lola And Pollen Plot

Inspired by the ladybug’s garden theme the two decide to have a giant frog threatening the ladybug which gets exploded by a pollen bomb. Amy loves the pose of the frog with its tongue flying out. The flog explodes fantastically with its tongue flying away as its head vanishes.

The Verdict

With the twelve teams achieving their goals of destruction it’s time for the judges to settle the score and the first elimination. The top two: Lauren and Bryan and Dave and Richard. Lauren and Bryan’s effective breaking of the frog and Dave and Richard’s strong storytelling put the two in the top. The winner of this challenge is Lauren and Bryan.

The bottom two are Tim and Zach and Jack and Dawn. Tim and Zach’s storytelling failing – or not falling – put them at a disadvantage. The same went for Jack and Dawn with their street scene being largely intact. The first team who has to leave the challenge is Jack and Dawn, with a few tears in the room as they leave their minifigs behind.

Next week’s – The Make and Shake challenge!
