A LEGO City Formula 1 race for two, a win for all!
Something every racing fan has begged for – and what’s not to love with the new LEGO City x F1 crossover series? From their own dedicated line in LEGO ICONS to the LEGO City sets we have here, let’s see how these hold up. A self contained racing station? Read on!
Mercedes-AMG F1 W15 & BWT Alpine F1 Team A524 Race Cars
The AMG racer comprises of three colours – the teal, black and grey. It might be one of the cooler colour designs in principles, this is one that doesn’t translate. The printed element on the back of the model doesn’t colour match as well with the rest of the body. This is a known problem with some of these prints, and it persists here.
Other than that, the Teal arches on the sides look very clunky when viewed from above but look great at eye-level. I don’t have a solution for this here, but just stating what I see. I think its design doesn’t translate the best out of all LEGO F1 cars. But if I had to chose one from this set I’d still choose this one.
The Alpine translates its colours a bit better than the AMG. The pinks and blue work well together, but the end of the model confuses me too. We get a curved element with almost purely black printed on top. Would this have not been better to print on black curved slopes? The writing doesn’t have to match as well with the rest of the body, as white is a very subtle colour. Is it cheaper to do it this way? I don’t know.
The Garage
Moving to the largest part of the model, the garage is designed to be closed up and put away with ease. The whole set is contained easily with no fidgeting or adjusting required! And yet despite this, we are given a lot of goodies on the inside.
We are treated to spare wheels, analysis computers, repair works, air compressors, tool sets and a trophy! This set is a lot of fun all bundled into one space – ideal for kids! To add to the set, we also get a launch play feature. Just like the power slam Technic models of old, we can apply pressure and launch the vehicles out of the bay!
LEGO Minifigures
The LEGO minifigures for this set are pretty generic for how LEGO City goes, but I do like that they ensure that there were no long haired people. As a person with long hair, I’m surprised that I haven’t got my hair caught in anything yet.
Amongst the figures of the set, the garage workers all have the same torso and leg combo, but the drivers stand apart. They remind me of the Technic competition line…
Verdict
This set is a great self contained garage. There’s a lot of fun playability within the model and enough to keep kids entertained. The price for the set does feel high, but with knowing that there is an overlap with f1 and what is contained, I think it is undoubtedly worth it.
