After Peter Parker, always expect Miles Morales to swing on in!
LEGO have made many variations of collectible masks for various characters over the years; from Spiderman to GotG and Star Wars. But after seeing the Venom mask recoloured into Carnage, it was only a matter of time before Peter Parker became Miles Morales. So how does the LEGO Marvel Miles Morales Mask hold up? Does it feel like a cheap repeat? Or is there something more?
The Mask
With the exact same part count as LEGO Marvel Spider-man Mask (76285), Miles Morales’ mask gives us a solid rounded head build exactly the same as their predecessor. With a mix of vibrant red prints and stickers mixed in, the set gives us a few exclusive prints to this set. The bold red outline around the eye really pops, and the black colour palette really makes the shaping of the head look great.
What this set does unfortunately suffer from is the black and red colour palette. With the original Spider-Man head, the splits between the bricks and the gaps made the head feel not quite finished. This set, on the other hand, has the dark parts of the gaps mesh well with the roundness of the head.
The black is huge benefit, but makes the interconnectedness of the red suffer. With the other head, the ‘gaps’ would help the mask feel more like a web. Here, we get spaced out non-connecting lines. It’s great when viewed front on, but the set really lacks from the sides.
These are really just stylistic gripes – an effect of having a colour swap. The model itself has some great part techniques in its construction and does really well to minimise the amount of visible studs. There are lots of interacting angles and parts that really showcase how good the original design was.
Verdict
There isn’t anything new to expect from this set if you have the original – It’s essentially a palette swap.
That isn’t to say that’s a bad thing – “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. What I do have issue with is the fact that the model this was based on is still live on the LEGO Website. Same part count, same techniques, but $10 AUD less.
Is there a reason why the price has gone up? Wouldn’t it have been smarter to release these same products at the same price point? I don’t know what the internal system is at LEGO, but charging more for the same build experience does feel like an incredible stab at the consumer market.
Look, the set is great an all – just maybe wait for this to be on special and don’t buy this for more than you would buy the other.
