LEGO 10276 – Roman Colosseum

The Set

Introducing Lego’s newest artistic display piece and most part-intensive set to date, the LEGO Colosseum set! Featuring intricate details, new parts, the ability to view it in complete 360 degrees, LEGO have brought us a set that can be sat on your display shelves at home showing the newer or older sides of the landmark… or have they?

This Black Friday, LEGO® fans can take home a piece of history and re-create Rome’s most iconic landmark, with the awe-inspiring new LEGO Colosseum set. This set measures over 10.5″ (27cm) high, 20.5″ (52cm) wide and 23.5″ (59cm) deep and is made up of 9,036 pieces; Making the LEGO Colosseum is the largest LEGO brick set launched to date.

Every detail of the set has been meticulously crafted to stay true to the real-life Colosseum, including having 80 ‘ribs’ in the spectator stands (the exact same number as the original) and having three different shades of brick to replicate the different columns and aging of the almost 2,000-year-old landmark.

The Size

The LEGO Colosseum rests on an oval base, allowing this phenomenal 360-degree display piece to be shown off from any angle. Builders can then choose which side of this magnificent LEGO Brick recreation, one of Rome’s most visited landmarks they display. Whether they choose the southern side of the building, which has been destroyed by various earthquakes and natural disasters over the years, or the more complete northern wall. Colosseum features arches, that have been recreated with LEGO brick detailing, allowing a view into the centre of the Colosseum from the outside, just like its real-life counterpart.

The set was designed by Rok Zgalin Kobe who commented:

“One of the biggest challenges and one of the most important things was to convey the Colosseum’s monumentality in the LEGO form. I felt that the LEGO model should display a special architectural feature of the original, the rows of columns flanking the arches in different styles. To achieve that, the model is constructed using an effect of vertical exaggeration. The cross-section is therefore far steeper than on the real structure. Hopefully, people will be inspired to learn more about the original through the experience of building the LEGO model.”

Easy Ways To Display The LEGO Roman Colosseum

The design is essentially flawless, but the practicality presents a few questions. Where can the average LEGO collector put such a large model? It certainly won’t fit on a shelf, and it’s too bulky to be a centrepiece on the dinner table. I have a few suggestions on how to fit the LEGO Colosseum into your home effortlessly.

1.

Remove the Millennium Falcon from its custom-made case and put the Colosseum in it instead. But what about the Millennium Falcon you say? Pfft. That’s yesterday’s problem!

2.

Make your kids share a room so you can present the Colosseum properly in its very own room. This will also reduce the amount of kids rooms that need cleaning by 50%!

3.

Glue the Colosseum together, turn it upside down and use it as a chandelier. (Light not included.

4.

Take it out of its box, build it, take a photo of it, disassemble it, then frame the photo and put it on your wall. It’s classy, it won’t collect dust, and will help justify buying more LEGO when Karen tells you ‘your damn LEGO is taking over this bloody house’.

5.

Car Garage? No, now you have a LEGO Garage! If you have a two-car garage, the Millennium Falcon issue is also solved!

But in all seriousness, we looked around our home and the only places this set will fit is our kitchen bench, the kitchen table and the floor. All of which are highly impractical. Those with a dedicated large LEGO room seem to be the only ones who could present the Colosseum in the way it deserves.

For those lucky enough to have the space, it’s available from LEGO.com and LEGO Stores from 27th November.
