SpongeBob…. Rectanglepants?
SpongeBob Squarepants returns as a LEGO set for the first time in 14 years! LEGO Brickheadz have been a staple in LEGO’s catalogue for a while, with this model being no. 328. But with each new iteration comes adaptation to different mediums, colours and designs. So how does this one hold up? Read on!
SpongeBob
Anyone familiar with Brickheadz will immediately know the central core design for these models. They all work off a core 4×4 structure with studs facing outwards for the head, and simple body details.
SpongeBob here changes that mould, opting for a 4×6 head shape on all sides. And oh boy do we need to talk about it.
There is one thing I know SpongeBob is, and it is not column, nor a pillar. LEGO opt to give us a SpongeBob character that fits to the pre-established mould with little variance. This is a model that should really not.
With a physicality of a thin-depth shape with a square-shaped top, SpongeBob’s look has his ‘yellow’ normally as wide as it is tall. The model also opts for him to have a depth of four bricks, where the model could have honestly just done it in two. Having the cartoon character look cartoony was the better option. Whatever this is? Eesh.
The set still opts for a variety of printed details; from his two face tiles, his shirt/pants combo and the iconic eye print. It is unfortunate here that we see the side of SpongeBob’s belt dropping down on the model. It’s a little detail that went unnoticed by me initially, but I can’t help but notice it now.
The character exudes a sense of unfamiliarity and feels like a knockoff.
Verdict
I honestly just don’t have words for this set.
I always feel bad not understanding the parameters that designers go through when designing sets, and don’t know how much gets knocked back. But this? What is this?
I cannot recommend this set, unless you have intent to try and make it better. I just, can’t.
