Ayrton Senna’s Senna-sational helmet!

Following LEGO’s own helmet designs released earlier this year, LEGO have made a sequel! With a new Formula 1 helmet to join the roster, how does this one hold up? Read on!

For those who have read out previous helmet reviews, this model showcases a lot of the same. These types of models showcase high levels of design skill, hyper-specific newly moulded elements for the visor, and create a fantastic display piece.

This particular helmet however showcases sticker on only the visor, just like the previous. Plus printing details everywhere else to convey the iconic yellow/green/blue of Aryton’s helmet. There is a this line that runs all the way around the helmet, and if it were not for the limitations on LEGO printing, they would likely connect. But LEGO Designers have done well to keep this consistent throughout to the best of their ability.

To avoid stickers, the LEGO Group has a tricky choice on the large element on the side of the helmet. From speaking to the LEGO Designer, we discovered that they opted to use a green element, and print yellow with the stripe on this piece. Of course, printing a lighter colour on top of a darker colour will always be tricky. So the yellow colour is slightly different to the rest of the helmet. But I this was the best solution at hand.

What printing is missing however is right on the helmet front. The large white patch on the helmet is usually an ad for Malboro, a well known cigarette company. Their omission from the model lines up with LEGO’s own play values. Once again, from speaking to the LEGO Designer, this actually replicate the model the design is based upon, which was received from Senna’s team. Possibly that was also a product aimed at a younger market.

Aryton Senna Minifigure

Aryton Senna’s figure uses a real unique overlapping of prints to showcase his driving suit tucked into his pants. The detail printing here is fantastic, and I’m a big fan of the shirt too. The head piece also offers us new prints, but I’ll admit that the face with the glasses I sometimes miss-see as the bad guy from Hidden Side, or two extra mouths.

Verdict

For Formula 1 fans, I’m sure that this is a set that has your eye already. Fans of the previous sets will feel quite comfortable adding this one to the collection. As for me, a non-car guy, it’s a neat designed model, but one I’ve essentially already built. Still good though!
