A dinosaur-creature of massive proportions!
LEGO Fortnite has arrived for a second wave – bringing plenty of characters (and a creature!) to the line up. We are going to take a close up look at LEGO Fortnite Klombo. With LEGO Fortnite in the digital space still seeing some traction, more sets to follow seemed like an organic development. But with a big price tag behind it, how does Klombo hold out?
It’s also worth noting that this particular set hold a special place in LEGO Master’s Australia’s ranks. Joss, winner of 2022’s LEGO Masters, currently works as a creature designer for the LEGO Fortnite team. Although the build isn’t a direct game-to-model replica of Klombo, this is still a special recognition of his initial work.
Klombo
LEGO Fortnite Klombo is truly one massive creature of a model – the entire build taking well and truly over the 1000 part total of the model just for it. There are lots of repeated patterns across the entirety of the model that consume a lot of this part count, but with iconic scaled textures and spines that couldn’t be translated any other way.
The creature holds a surprising amount of movement – with the legs and head attached by differing means to allow mobility, rotation and expression.
For most people, the differences between Klombo’s in-game appearance and physical wouldn’t be noticed at first glance. But when comparing the two side by side there are only minor changes.
Firstly, the axolotl-like frills were initially created with shields, and the colours over the ‘shoulder’ of the legs are made of a slightly different construction. And lastly, the LEGO Group have opted for more solid coloured eyes rather than the more cartoon-like in Joss’ original model. With a really good model as a starting point, it’s a fantastic upgrade for those little details.
That being said, the new model seems to have a shorter tail, and certainly has a lot more studs exposed compared to the original.
Minifigures
The Minifigures of this set are Oro and a special Island Adventure Peely – with a special QR code on the instructions to be able to unlock them in game! We are also treated to a Klomberry bush as well, something used in the game to feed these herbivorous creatures.
Although Peely’s mould is nothing new, for Peely fans this is a must have. With new prints and vibrant colours, he’s a pretty solid figure.
For me however, Oro is the king! Rumoured to be Midas themselves, from the ‘Midas Touch’ mythos, this figure is fantastic to me. Not only because I am a Dungeons and Dragons aficionado, but the crown mould for the character is incredibly unique and versatile. Easily my favourite out of all the characters released thus far.
Verdict
Coming in to this set, I was prepared to feel a little stiffed for my money with a price tag of $150 AUD – but I was pleasantly surprised.
The reality is, this is a set that has well over 1000 parts to recreate a character straight from the game and to the consumer’s home. Throw in a digital reward in the mix and knowledge that it is a licenced theme? Everything makes a lot more sense.
The set is an almost replica of the digital model, but that digital model holds up on its own. What some LEGO Fortnite fans thought they could never get is here – with plenty of value to boot.
