McLaren MP4/4, watch out! There’s a new car on the race track!
Joining in the lineup of midi-scaled racers of from LEGO HQ, fans of last year’s McLaren MP4/4 have another car to collect. The LEGO ICONS Williams Racing FW14B & Nigel Mansell. Designed by our good friend Gus McLaren, Nigel Mansell gets his own racing greatness build in brick form. With a familiar feel but with lots of new recolours, how does this one hold up on the track? Read on!
Around the Williams FW14B
The Williams FW14B is an immaculately designed LEGO set. There are a lot of elements needing to be constructed in all sorts of manners to keep to smooth shaping and curves all over.
One of my favourite details with this model is the lack of studs where possible across the body. It’s a professional finish that brings the model closer in line to the real deal.
We also get lots of subtle techniques across the model, such as the hinge element in blue that is well hidden on the front of the vehicle. There’s subtle curvature on the sides of the main seat, and vents on the sides too.
The set is also covered in all manner of stickers. From Canon to Renault, there is no shortage of sponsors that don’t make this feel like it isn’t from the track. I’m not a huge fan of some of the stickers around the colour changes between bricks. This is a common thing with LEGO and a design compromise, but I know a lot of people may have a mental struggle with this if they mess up the placement.
A Closer Look At The Details
You’d be quick to assume that the wheels of this vehicle are the same on all sides, but they aren’t! The Williams Racing Car actually has larger wheels to the back than the front, making two sets of exclusive wheels to the set. A subtle details here as well is the new recoloured blue technic spacers used to hold the rear wheels in too.
Nigel Mansell Minifigure and Car Stand
Our exclusive figure for the set is none other than Nigel Mansell, back in his 1992 racing gear with his iconic moustache. We get a fun use of a few parts together to make the trophy, which is a simple and neat build. The stand for Nigel matches the same for Ayrton Senna, equipped with a really nice quote.
I for one, love this quote. It’s a lot less overwhelming compared to Ayrton Senna’s, and is a mantra we need more of.
LEGO Designer Gus McLaren
This set is the first LEGO Set of Gus McLaren’s as part of the LEGO Icons Team. Quite comfortably in his new element, this has given him opportunities to meet Nigel Mansell in the flesh!
What an honour!
Verdict
For LEGO Masters Australia fans, this is a dead easy purchase. It’s Gus! We love Gus!
As for our F1 fans, this is a set that won’t disappoint. I was a fan of the McLaren last year, but this one feels like it builds on the previous version and adds a lot more to the roster. With more to see, more to experience as the build goes on – it’s a dead win.
110% recommend.
