Snoopy & Woodstock

Snoopy and Woodstock translate pretty well into LEGO, with their shaping being comic book accurate despite part limitations.

One thing I did not expect to see in this model was alternate pieces for the character builds. Yes, Snoopy’s default design doesn’t actually allow for him to sit or stand in one mode, and thus, LEGO included some extras. With the addition of alternate legs to change his pose, Snoopy’s build suddenly becomes a straggle of parts. To have Snoopy lie down on the roof, simply remove his head and take away his tail! With an adjustment to his neck placement, Snoopy can lay flat. But what if you want him to sit? Easy! Snap his head back where it was before, change the legs, and viola!

This is the sort of thing I expect from MOCs at shows, so it was quite frankly bizarre to see this in this model. But ultimately, I can side with LEGO here with their decision making. There was simply no viable way to make this character all in one.

Woodstock is the opposite however. Woodstock uses a yellow Minifigure fork, new hair tuft elements, and even a new minifigure headgear recolour to make this effect. The dome used to make his nose/face is almost like a classic space helmet with no visor. This originally appeared as Mr Freeze’s headgear, but this is the first time we see it in a solid colour. Although the build it small, the LEGO Group convey it fantastically.

The Doghouse

The doghouse is a fantastic build with a very clean aesthetic, although the design may appear simple. There is a clear attention to detail across the model to make the edges appear sharp and clean, but also keeping all of the wood spacings the same too. The build it also cleverly designed in a way that allows the anti-studs across the top of the model to connect to the characters and accessories.

By simply removing Snoopy’s tail, you can lay him backwards with Woodstock on his belly – like the comic panel. You can also opt to have Snoopy sit with a typewriter, or just with Woodstock too. It’s great versatility for something as simple as a roof, but well thought through nevertheless.

Alternate Builds

Snoopy’s doghouse isn’t just a red box for show, but also contains another display option in the set. By taking the box away, we reveal a starry night build that folds outwards. We also get a campfire and two marshmallows on a stick so that Snoopy and Woodstock can cook them over a fire together.

There isn’t a lot added by this little build, but the fact that the LEGO group have included it in a way that doesn’t detract from the build is great. This also allows for an alternate display option for those who get tired of the red house, but you still need to find a home for that in the meantime.

Verdict

This is ultimately a set filled with nostalgia of a long distant time that hits home for some.

It’s a set that accurately conveys Snoopy and Woodstock together with all the elements at LEGO’s disposal. I can’t fault the design for how it all comes together, albeit the extra parts are still odd to me to see. I do recommend this to fans however – and the price for an IP feels pretty good. Recommend.
