Play Station Console – Retro or LEGO?

LEGO have made many retro consoles over the years, stemming first from the LEGO Super Mario Nintendo Entertainment System (71374) set. With each new console that has been designed into a set, LEGO have been increasing the benchmark for each model every step of the way. Now with 2026 giving us a late introduction to a console, but nevertheless an important one, the LEGO Playstation.

So with the anticipation of the PlayStation in LEGO out of the way, how does it hold up? Read on!

Controller

The LEGO PlayStation controller has been designed in a way that feels really authentic to hold to the original controller. LEGO opted to smooth out every surface of the controller like the classic design, and made it really comfortable to grip.

The controllers also sport a new mould – a 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 rounded plate combo, which appear here in 4 different prints, but unprinted elsewhere in the model.

Although we don’t get functional buttons like the Nintendo Gameboy, the model’s smaller size demands accuracy first – which they do! The designers have also opted for some nice complicated techniques for the overall structure, and the controller remains my favourite part.

Console

The LEGO PlayStation console is a lot more packed with details that you would initially assume. LEGO made sure to cover the stands underneath the model, the pin connections on controllers, textured edges and lots of rounded details.

The model also involves a tiny bit of Technic to allow the intended functions to work, but I can’t overstate the design craftsmanship to ensure the level of accuracy the model has. Although some rounding on the lid could have possibly made cleaner (1×3 rounded slopes overlapping slopes below), this is ultimately minor by contrast.

The console is also hidden with goodies – more on that below.

Working Features

It isn’t an accurate LEGO recreation if it doesn’t cover the working features! The set has a variety of play functions, such as the interactable buttons (but it doesn’t turn on!) and even funnily getting stuck now and then. How accurate!

Hidden References

Ape escape makes its way into the PlayStation, with a new banana printed tile and a small jungle landscape tucked away! It also has a new 6 x 8 translucent plate!

We also get ourselves Grand Turismo, one of PlayStation’s early successes, and a Play Station logo too!

Verdict

The LEGO PlayStation model may be one in a long line of Retro gaming console sets, but it is certainly one of the most advanced. With each year that LEGO introduces elements, the more defined and accurate the models become.

I didn’t grow up with a PlayStation, but my wife did. And both of us can comfortably agree that this is a fantastic rendition.
