77256 LEGO Speed Champions Time Machine Back to the Future New Release Review Brick Banter - 2025 November

A set from the past but Back from the Future!

We’ve had our servings of Back to the Future from LEGO before. From LEGO Ideas, LEGO Dimensions, LEGO Icons and now the LEGO Speed Champions Time Machine from Back to the Future.

Each new version gives something new and something unique in each flavourful version. But it was only time before we would see LEGO dip themselves back into the franchise. And with LEGO Speed Champions being a strong theme leading the way in new elements, who better to make that version than that team?

But with so many versions before, how does this one hold up? Read on!

77256 LEGO Speed Champions Time Machine from Back to the Future release date and price

The DeLorean

The DeLorean, in simple words, is an amazing upgrade. The LEGO Speed Champions model has never looked this clean nor accurate before from LEGO. And with the new car hood element for this model, it frames together nicely. I’m sure there are fans out there that are disappointed that the doors do not open upwards, but this is a good pay-off for the price tag in my opinion.

The model introduces a few new elements and recolours in the set, notably the 2×2 corner tile in trans-blue and the new middle plate bracket used on the exhausts.

Although somewhat troublesome in the past, I really like how the designers have used the flexible elements across the sides of the vehicle for the cables. The effect works incredibly well.

I should also warn you, as a LEGO Speed Champions set, the model is littered with a mix of printed and sticker elements. The important details are here, like the dates they go to in the film and the Flux Capacitor, but there are also sticker elements for the sides and rear of the model. If you don’t have a LEGO Speed Champions model as a frame of reference, brace yourself.

Episode 2 Version

As a fun bonus, you can rebuild to the flying car version with some simple rebuilds around the vehicle.

I do absolutely love that we get both versions here included in the single set, but there is no doubt in my mind that fans will want to get two of this set and display both. It does feel like the set is somewhat slightly lacking without that pink hoverboard…

Minifigures

Our set comes with our two protagonists, Marty McFly and Doc Brown!

Although each figure may have had two iterations before, there are new things to be seen here. For one, the red puffer jacket that debuted in the DreamzzZ theme was something that fans were quick to add to their own Marty McFly – a pattern continued here.

Doc Brown has his classic white overalls and coloured Hawaiian shirt underneath, but is now adorned in more apparatus than ever before. Although both figures have new faces for their characters, there isn’t much to set them apart from their previous versions – no issue here though! If it ain’t broke – don’t fix it.

Both figures feel right at home – and both fit in the car, with puffer jacket and all!

Verdict

This is a set very worthy of being called the best iteration of a DeLorean that LEGO has made yet.

I am incredibly glad you can put the figures inside the model. I also foresee that fans will be buying two for both models, and it will be a popular set. They’ve done incredibly well and I cannot recommend it enough.
