Lotso love or Lotso not to like?
The new LEGO | Disney and Pixar Toy Story Lotso was recently revealed and we have got our hands on it early for a look! With Toy Story 5 now on our horizons. How do these new LEGO Toy Story sets hold up? Giving us a set based on the fluffy, albeit evil, character from Toy Story 3. We have Lotso as a direct set. But without all that fluff and now being in ABS plastic, how does it hold up? Read on!
Lotso
Our dear care-bear look-a-like Lotso is one interesting bear to build. Not only do we get a large bear build, but it is probably one of the most articulated we have ever got. The head is connected in such a way that Lotso can have a subtle tilt, which surprisingly adds a lot of character.
We get articulation in the shoulder, the hand, and the neck too. I know that doesn’t sound like a lot. Considering his legs are locked in place, but that’s more than we have got before!
With an overflow of pink elements that are both new or rare, this set works great from a LEGO MOC perspective.
What I do think I need to discuss is the subtleties that differentiate this set from the Lotso from the movie. Albeit subtle, the LEGO set does come across more cartoonish and unlike the source due to Lotso’s eyes. I’m not sure if 1×1 tiles would have save the set, but the 2×2 eye tiles feel too big to me. Either that, or too close. His head does feel a little bit more narrow than the character too, but you can at least still tell it is supposed to be him.
I’m not a big fan of the angry version of Lotso (as most people shouldn’t be), but the happy expression is the absolute best way to display him.
Verdict
My feelings on the set are mixed on the LEGO Toy Story Lotso. I’m not a big fan of our bear-in-pink, but at the same time, this isn’t a set that I would look for at the shops. Toy Story 3 came out 16 years ago (yikes!), and having a set based around the antagonist is strange to me. I personally would have loved to get Bullseye or even Hamm in its stead.
It’s a set that isn’t bad in a way I would discourage you from purchasing it. I’m just lost as to the choice behind it. Is there a large collection of Lotso fans I am just not aware of? You tell me.
